It was on our third or fourth day at sea, better said, it was at night of course, as these things (and others) usually happen. Meteorite strike or not.
Anyway, Jan was sleeping down below, Stephan and I were on deck on watch when Jan came up (it was probably around 2100 local time) and said he heard a bang from the deck (he slept in the saloon). We looked around with our flashlights, couldn’t find anything amiss and said it was probably just a block banging on deck or something.
Until, in daylight, we found this…
We went up the mast (twice) to find anything which could have caused this, but couldn’t find anything.
Some theories of what happened:
- Meteorite Strike
- Airplane Parts Drop
- Air Bubble when laying up deck
What is your most plausible scenario? Let me know. We still don’t know squat. By the way, as you can see on the picture, there’s an indent in what appears (to me) in the epoxy layer (blackish stuff) which is smooth and round to the touch (a finger just fits in nicely). The edges of the gelcoat are not too jagged and not too smooth.

Ask Chicken Little. He’s got some expertise in these matters.
Man, just think how that would have hurt if it hit one of you in the head.

In theory it could have been a 300 lb one-legged mermaid in an 8″ high heel jumping on deck.
