Our friends Nik and Diana hadn’t been out with us on Vega yet, so we took the chance and planned for a full-day fishing trip to our favorite fishing & cruising grounds, the Limas. The stage was set for 29th of July, with a forecast F2, the HK Observatory with good reason does not give out any wind direction. While we are a sailboat, it does not mean that we can’t motor and motor-sail (although the latter requires more than apparent wind) and we were sure there will be a touch of breeze every now and then. And besides, we wanted fish.
That I’m not opening “the mother of all fishing trips” blog entry with a photo of a fish, should probably be an indication of what did not happen on the trip. Anyway, read more after the break.Getting up just in time, at 0630 to catch the ebbing current. Jan and Faye surprisingly showed up (well they in fact told us they’ll be coming but who would count on it) and thence we were on our way at 0715. It was already unbearably hot. Hot means 30C in the early morning with a humidity of felt 100% (it probably was slightly less, really). The tidal forecast along with ebbing stream helped us to make way and we did a constant 7 knots over ground towards our fishing grounds.
We set out the fishing tackle around Lamma Island, around halfway to Wai Ling Ding.
So we had four lures out, and didn’t have a single hookup. We didn’t have a single bite. We didn’t have a single nothing. NOTHING.
And it was hot. We were sweating like we never sweated before. And it was all in vain. The first mate even stocked up on supplies so we had ample choise of how to prepare the fish. And least not forget the 10kg ice we brought along. Just in case…
